Alleged burger burglar arrested

A man has been arrested in relation to the burglary of Dunedin fast food restaurant Velvet Burger last month.

Constable Karl O'Dowda said police arrested the 27-year-old, who had been evading police for some time, in Dunedin yesterday.

The man would appear in the Dunedin District Court on Friday on a burglary charge.

A bag containing the $13,000 engagement ring, laptop, iPod and wallet of Velvet Burger employee Emma Kyle, which was taken during the September 11 burglary, has not been located.

Const O'Dowda said there was a possibility the bag, with its contents still inside, was thrown into bushes on the grounds of Knox Church, further north of Velvet Burger in George St, shortly after the burglary.

Ms Kyle said she was pleased an arrest had been made.

"It's the best I've felt for a while."

She had learned she would not get any insurance because the office area that was burgled was unlocked on that night.

She hoped someone would find the bag, but was realistic the likelihood of that was slim.

Const O'Dowda said police would be making further inquiries about the whereabouts of the bag.

He asked anyone who had found a blue and cream checked Country Road duffle bag, containing a laptop, wallet and other personal effects, in the area of Knox Church, to contact Dunedin police.
