Teen hurt in Baldwin St bike crash

A 16-year-old boy who crashed into a car while cycling down Baldwin St on Tuesday night remains in Dunedin Hospital's high dependency unit for assessment.

Emergency services were called to the Northeast Valley street at 8.30pm, following reports a cyclist was trapped under a car, and the injured boy was transferred to hospital.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said it appeared the boy was riding down the street with a group of teenagers on their mountain bikes when he swerved to avoid a cat and struck a parked vehicle.

The boy was wearing a cycle helmet.

Last November, three men were charged after riding a chilly bin down Baldwin St, the world's steepest street.

In 2001, a 19-year-old University of Otago student was killed when the wheelie bin in which she travelling down the street struck a parked trailer.
