Ngai Tahu hui at Karitane

Hundreds of people are expected to descend on Karitane later this month to attend the annual hui of Ngai Tahu shareholders.

Hosted by Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki, which is preparing to welcome more than 800 people from around the country, the three-day hui begins on November 19 with a powhiri.

Runanga manager Suzanne Ellison said it was the first time Karitane had hosted the Hui a Tau, and likened the event to a shareholders' meeting of an extended family's firm.

While guests had to find their own accommodation, it was up to the host runanga to provide the meeting venue and food for up to 1000 people, with cockles served in a kelp bag featuring on the menu.

A large marquee would be erected, where guests would receive updates from Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu representatives, including kaiwhakahaere Mark Solomon.

The community had been very supportive, and "everyone was looking forward to it", Ms Ellison said.
