Bus service trial still sought

Their request for a trial bus service between Karitane and Evansdale has been declined but Liz Abbott and Rudie Verhoef are not giving up.

The Otago Regional Council finance and corporate committee recommended their request, made most recently at the annual plan hearings, be turned down due to road and timing issues and increased risk and costs.

Ms Abbott said they were still asking for a fair trial, as the last and only trial along Coast Rd was conducted in 1999 for four days only.

"We do not believe this is a fair trial on which to base decisions in 2010."

If the council was concerned about safety, there was already an extreme accident risk in the park and ride system, where northbound passengers were left on the far side of State Highway 1 in peak traffic, she said.

Coast Rd had received full maintenance and resealing where needed in the past 12 months, she said.
