SPCA animal attendant Donna Hurring, fusses over some of the 15 adult male cats at the Dunedin SPCA needing homes.

She says fewer adoptions and more cats being dropped off are adding to the usual holiday workload at the Opoho animal shelter.

She said it was common at this time of year for the number of adoptions to reduce and the number of abandoned, rescued or homeless cats the SPCA had to deal with, to increase.

At present the shelter is housing dozens of cats, including 15 male adult cats, 19 female adult cats, several strays, at least 15 kittens, and 11 cats in its hospital.

There are also many cats and kittens being fostered by people around Dunedin and more waiting to come to the shelter.

Many of the animals had been at the SPCA for several months or more, she said.
