Transforming someone else's junk into a kiwiana treasure
is a pastime and a passion for Cathie McCarthy.
The Seacliff artist has been creating art since she was a
child and will be selling her "original creations", called
"funkiwiana", at the Thieves' Alley Market Day in Dunedin on
Saturday.
After originally painting and selling terracotta flower pots,
she wanted to find another way to express herself when buying
new pots got too costly. So, she visits garage sales and
second hand shops and buys items she can "embellish in some
way".
"I just get an enormous amount of pleasure from doing it,"
she said.
The market, organised by the Dunedin City Council, will
feature about 330 stalls, children's entertainment and live
music.
Organiser Hazel Murtagh said the market was one of the
biggest in the South Island and one of Dunedin's largest
events.
Cruise ship Amsterdam will also be in port on Saturday,
boosting numbers in the city by about 1400.
The market runs from 10am to 4pm in the Octagon and
surrounding streets.
