NHNZ head nominated for innovation award

Dunedin-based Natural History New Zealand (NHNZ) managing director Michael Stedman is among seven entrepreneurs and innovators honoured in this year's World Class New Zealand Awards.

One will receive the supreme award in Auckland in April.

Presented annually by the Kea global network and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, nominees are judged on five criteria, including promoting New Zealand internationally and building global connections.

The category winners were announced yesterday.

Mr Stedman won the creative category.

He has worked in the television industry for more than 30 years and has held senior positions in Australia and New Zealand.

NHNZ began life in Dunedin in 1977 as TVNZ's Natural History Unit.

Mr Stedman joined the staff in 1979 as an executive producer.

He worked in Australia between 1981 and 1987, returning to Dunedin to manage the unitas well as being TVNZ's director of production.

Within 18 months he had tripled the unit's output and began international co-production.

NHNZ, now part of the Fox International Channels group, is one of the largest natural history producers in the world and its programmes are seen on some of the world's leading networks including National Geographic and Discovery channels.
