Strong gusts in Otago

Severe gale-force gusts were experienced along most of coastal Otago yesterday.

The westerly gusts reached a maximum 113kmh at Swampy Summit, near Dunedin, about noon yesterday.

High winds were also experienced on the Rock and Pillar Range, with gusts of up to 98kmh recorded about 8am.

In Dunedin, the winds gusted up to a high of 98kmh at 11am, while Moeraki recorded 98kmh at 2pm and Oamaru 89kmh at 3pm.

Forecaster Mark Pascoe said the winds were expected to ease last night but a moist northwest flow was expected to redevelop today ahead of another cold front.

"Heavy falls are expected to spread into south Westland and the Otago headwaters later Thursday, probably lasting 12 to 18 hours."

As the front moves northwards, much colder southwesterlies should bring persistent rain to Otago and Canterbury on Saturday and Sunday morning.
