More than 200 cats have been provided to Dunedin residents during an "adopt-a-thon" organised by the SPCA Otago to make room for "quake cats" arriving from Christchurch.

Otago SPCA chief executive officer Phil Soper was yesterday delighted with the "great" response from Dunedin people to the free kitten and cat adopt-a-thon over the weekend.

Mr Soper recently brought 19 cats south from Christchurch, on behalf of the Canterbury SPCA.

Ten of the cats had remained in Dunedin and nine had gone to the SPCA in Invercargill.

The 10 Christchurch cats, and about another 120 Dunedin cats and kittens of various ages had been adopted during the weekend adopt-a-thon.

Another 70 Dunedin kittens and cats were provided free to other members of the public earlier last week, he said.

Normally, kittens and cats provided by the SPCA cost $140 and $120 respectively, to partly offset SPCA costs of about $320 each, required to de-sex, worm and feed the cats before they can be adopted.
