No gates for Long Beach

Long Beach Domain will not be gated because the community does not like the idea, Long Beach Amenities Society secretary David Keen says.

Mr Keen said a public meeting in Long Beach on Wednesday night, attended by 22 members of the public and four Dunedin City Council representatives, resulted in changes to the domain improvement plan.

The council had proposed gating the reserve to prevent boy racers entering at night, and suggested improving the area with planting and landscape features.

Mr Keen said the community preferred targeted landscaping to make the domain less accessible for boy racer activities.

The meeting was constructive and fruitful, Mr Keen said.

DCC parks and reserves team leader Martin Thompson said it was evident from the meeting there was little support for gating the domain.

The community wanted the 4.6ha domain kept as wild and natural as possible.

Using landscaping to stymie boy racers' "hooning" in the domain had the advantage that it worked for any time of the day, not just at night when gates could be locked.

A modified plan would be circulated to residents for further feedback.

The modification would probably not change the cost of the project, which has no set budget, because the cost of two gates ($1800) would be offset by additional landscaping work.
