Nearly $500,000 will be pumped into the Otago economy this year for a wide variety of events set to take place during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

The Lottery Grants Board funding is part of $9.48 million the board has granted throughout New Zealand for the Real New Zealand Festival, which will highlight the country's arts and culture, food and wine, heritage, entertainment, and lifestyle during the world cup.

While the total of the funding was announced late last year, not all the details of individual grants were released at that time.

Minister of Internal Affairs Nathan Guy yesterday said 175 events had won a share of the funding nationally.

"A huge variety of events and activities all over New Zealand, which are part of the Real New Zealand Festival, have received funding, which will help communities play a major part in the Rugby World Cup 2011.

"This is the largest-ever celebration for this country and the first time a Rugby World Cup host nation has staged a nationwide festival alongside the tournament."

Otago will benefit from $441,600 for 19 events, with the New Zealand International Science Festival taking the largest amount of $135,000 for its Taste of Dunedin event, planned to celebrate the multicultural aspect of the city and its Maori, Scottish and Chinese heritage with up to 70 activities.

Festival director Sue Clarke said yesterday the confirmation of the funding allowed the organisation to get on with the planning still required.

Nationally, some of the highlights included $250,000 for Real Canterbury Market Days and A Taste of Canterbury, featuring food and wine from the region; $350,000 for a family concert in the Auckland Domain on Labour Day; $350,000 for a major outdoor projection project on Wellington's most prominent buildings, and $100,000 for a Taste of Southland festival.

Mr Guy said he was pleased all but two of the events planned for Christchurch were going ahead.

"Some reorganisation may be required but there is a real determination that the city will not miss out."
