Forsyth Barr Stadium developers are about to begin installing the artificial turf system at the Dunedin site.

The Otago Daily Times understands the machinery for the work has arrived from overseas, has cleared Customs and is ready to operate.

Funding for the Desso GrassMaster system was announced last year, with the New Zealand Community Trust providing $605,556, and the Southern Trust $50,000.

The equipment should allow the turf to be used about three times more frequently than just natural turf.

Desso's website said the computer-controlled machines would inject an artificial grass fibre every 2cm by 2cm into the natural turf pitch at the stadium.

During the growing process, the grass roots would entwine with the synthetic grass fibres and anchor the turf into a stable and even field.

The pitch would have the same playing characteristics as natural turf, but recovered faster between games and events thanks to 20 million artificial fibres, it said.

Carisbrook Stadium trust chairman Malcolm Farry could not provide information on the matter this week, but said there would be a "media opportunity" next week.
