Schools review on schedule

Education Minister Anne Tolley is on target to announce the fate of some of South Dunedin's underused schools by early July.

The process was delayed earlier this year when the ministry received 120 submissions in the first round of consultation on the South Dunedin schools review. The number slowed the process by about a month.

However, a spokesman for Mrs Tolley said a report from the Ministry of Education on issues raised during the second round of consultation was due to be sent to Mrs Tolley by the end of next week.

The report will make recommendations about which schools, if any, should be closed or merged.

During the second round of consultation, Mrs Tolley proposed a merger of Caversham, College Street and Calton Hill Schools on the Caversham site as a years 1-6 primary school, a years 1-8 primary school, or a primary school on the Caversham site with a campus on the Calton Hill site.

Two further options were to merge Macandrew Intermediate and Forbury schools as a years 1-8 school on the Macandrew Intermediate School site, or close Macandrew Intermediate and retain Forbury School as a years 1-8 school on its present site.

The spokesman said Mrs Tolley was expected to make a decision on the fate of the schools in early July, and the changes could be implemented from term 1 next year.

"Everything is running to plan," he said.

Mrs Tolley said she would make the ministry's consultation report available once she had had time to consider it.

Mrs Tolley started the consultation process last year in response to the 620 surplus pupil places at Calton Hill, Caversham, College Street, Forbury and Macandrew Intermediate schools.

She said a review had become necessary because the roll declines could lead to reduced funding, reduced staffing and fewer educational options for pupils.
