Alumni fundraiser for stadium

Marc Ellis, Alison Shanks, Jonathan Lemalu, and Dr David Kirk are urging other University of Otago alumni to join a new Forsyth Barr Stadium supporters club.

The brainchild of former University Chancellor and Carisbrook Stadium Trust trustee, Sir Eion Edgar, the Forsyth Barr Stadium University Supporters Club targets alumni members outside of Otago and Southland.

"I have always advocated that we should include graduates from outside Otago and Southland, to give them the opportunity to remember their alma mater," he said.

That opportunity was available for $500 per annum for five years for a 10-year membership or a one-off payment of $2000, and would "help towards private-sector funding".

Members would be entitled to a personalised brick which would be laid outside the stadium, have access to complimentary tickets, have preferential booking for all events, and be recognised on a roll of honour.

He was hoping hundreds of the packages would be snapped up, with the University of Otago offering its support and help in targeting some of the estimated 85,000 alumni on its database.

Sir Eion said many had fond memories of their university days and it was important to enlist their support and encourage them to return with their former friends and flatmates or even "to visit their sons and daughters".

He was pleased alumni, including Ellis, Shanks, Lemalu, Kirk, Dr David Gerrard, Kereyn Smith, Dr Lesley Rumball and Prof Murray Brennan, had offered to supply testimonials when contacted about the project.

"Our university days set us on the course of our personal, business, cultural and sporting lives and bind us as one alma mater. Now it is our turn to create futures," Dr Kirk said in his testimonial.
