Four replacement stone finials - decorative carved ornaments topping spires - were lifted into place on the Larnach tomb at Dunedin's Northern Cemetery this week.

The finials, replacing those which have crumbled and deteriorated, were designed and carved by sculptor and stonemason Marcus Wainwright.

Mr Wainwright spent six to eight months working on various pieces for the tomb, Dunedin Monumental Masons stonemason Craig Morton, who is overseeing the project, said.

The tomb houses the remains of prominent Dunedin businessman and MP, William Larnach (1833-98), his first two wives, and his eldest daughter and son.

About $350,000 was raised by the Historic Cemeteries Conservation Trust of New Zealand to restore it.

Some windows were still to be put in place, but restoration work was nearing completion, Mr Morton said.
