The Dunedin City Council has selected a preferred chief executive, but it may be a week before that person is officially named.
Shortlisted candidates were interviewed by Mayor Dave Cull and the city's councillors during a public-excluded council meeting in Dunedin on Saturday.
Recruitment company EQI Global was appointed to find a replacement for former chief executive Jim Harland, prompting 47 applications and interest from across NewZealand and as far afield as Australia and the United Kingdom.
Mr Cull would not say how many candidates attended, where they were from, or if the councillors were unanimous in their decision.
"An offer has been made and we will allow a couple of days for that to be accepted," Mr Cull said.
If accepted, the appointee would fill the vacancy left by Mr Harland, whose resignation took effect on January 21.
Mr Cull said it was hoped to announce the new chief executive next Monday.
