The first game of rugby at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium will be between two of the city's university colleges, with Knox and Selwyn to play on the venue's opening day.
Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML) yesterday announced the teams, made up of students from the University of Otago, would play in an August 5 lunchtime event, open to the public for a gold-coin donation.
DVML chief executive David Davies said the colleges had a strong rugby tradition and connection to Dunedin, so the match was "fitting" for the opening day.
Opening-day celebrations will begin with a Mana Whenua dawn blessing by local iwi, attended by Prime Minister John Key.
"It's a much anticipated day and we want as many people as possible to get along to either or both of these events," Mr Davies said.
"This will be the first test event on the pitch so is an important event for us to gauge crowd behaviour and get one under our belt before the Heartland Championship match between North Otago and the West Coast a couple of days later."
Profits from the event will go to a local charity.
The public will be seated in the north stand and access will be through Gate D.
