Global media star, Sirocco the kakapo, will visit Dunedin in September, taking up residence at Orokonui Ecosanctuary.

Orokonui successfully completed a rigorous and detailed application process and signed a deed of agreement with the Director of Conservation to secure Sirocco's visit.

"We are very lucky to have Sirocco visit us over the Rugby World Cup, when Otago people and many visitors to Otago and Southland will get the opportunity to see him," marketing manager Ryan Craig said.

Sirocco, the advocate for the Department of Conservation's kakapo recovery programme, was a special native bird, which after appearing on BBC's Last Chance to See documentary became something of an online superstar, he said.

Orokonui will hold guided tours to see Sirocco from September 3 to 26. They will also show screenings about kakapo and Orokonui staff will talk about caring for kakapo.

"We hope this opportunity to experience Sirocco will inspire everyone to play a part in kakapo recovery and in protecting all our unique native wildlife," Orokonui general manager Chris Baillie said.
