Posts up, lines marked - and then Graham, Richie and the boys breezed in.

The turf at Forsyth Barr Stadium had its first work-out yesterday, and it was the cream of the crop who had the first go.

The All Blacks wandered on to the turf yesterday afternoon, with the new stadium fresh from the posts being put up and the lines marked out this week.

They had a brisk training run - with cones out, and lights on - marking the first time any team had been allowed on the grass.

All Black manager Darren Shand and coach Graham Henry decided to give the players a chance to experience the venue, and its transparent roof, after touring the facility when they visited the Highlanders during the Super 15 season.

While confirmation the training could go ahead happened only yesterday, the All Blacks were eager to take up the offer - even if the site is still being completed.

Shand yesterday said at least one player was enthusiastic.

"Andrew Hore just walked into the changing rooms and said `I'm signing now'," Shand said of the All Black hooker who is looking to join the Highlanders for the next Super 15 season.

"You can't help but be impressed can you?" As well as all the All Black coaching and management staff on the field, spotters in bright orange jackets were circling the ground making sure the grass stood up to the test.

Though the New Zealand Rugby Union had wanted to play the test against Fiji tomorrow night at the venue, it is unfinished, so the test will be played at Carisbrook.

The new stadium is due to be handed over to Dunedin Venues Management Ltd on August 1, with an official opening on August 5.

The first inter-provincial game will be between West Coast and North Otago on August 7. Otago plays its first game at the venue on August 17 against Manawatu.
