Proposal dropped

A plan to change the name of a street near Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium has itself been changed.

Councillors at this week's Dunedin City Council infrastructure services committee voted to rename the remaining sections of Parry St - either side of the nearly-completed stadium - as Parry St "West" and "East".

Council staff had planned to retain the Parry St name for the remaining western section, while the smaller section remaining to the east would become Gambia St, after a World War 2 cruiser with Otago links.

Public consultation had initially generated only a muted response, and no objections.

However, Cr Andrew Noone last month acknowledged a submission from NZ Oil Services Ltd in Parry St, criticising the change to Gambia St, had been missed.

The names were reconsidered earlier this month, resulting in councillors on Tuesday voting for the change to Parry St East and West.
