The Dunedin City Council's Municipal Chambers in the Octagon is illuminated during a test at the weekend, by 64 new exterior fluorescent lights, designed to highlight the building's heritage features.

The lights - costing between $100,000 and $150,000 - were part of the $45 million Town Hall upgrade project, including the Municipal Chambers, Dunedin Centre and Town Hall, council city property manager Robert Clark said.

The lighting was designed to "gently wash the face of the building", casting shadows highlighting the historic features of the building, with low energy consumption, Octa director David Booth said.
