Conference at stadium

One of the country's major medical conferences will be held in the Forsyth Barr Stadium next August.

This year, the four-day New Zealand Medical Association's annual South General Practice Conference and Medical Exhibition was transferred to Dunedin from Christchurch and held in the Dunedin Town Hall in July.

It attracted 550 participants, including GPs, practice nurses and practice managers, but academic convener Dr Peter Chapman-Smith said he expected next year's August 16 to 19 conference could involve up to 650.

Dunedin had proved a popular venue this year, with some North Island GPs choosing to come to the Dunedin meeting rather than the alternative and much larger Rotorua one held in June.

The only drawback to Dunedin was the extra cost of flights.

He suspected one of the reasons for the venue's popularity was that many of the conference-goers had offspring attending university in Dunedin.

Also, many trained at the University of Otago and enjoyed visiting old haunts.

The conference has a mix of workshops designed to keep the various practitioners up to date with clinical and office practice as well as presentations on topical issues.
