$720,000 available for health projects

The former Well Dunedin PHO has more than $720,000 to distribute for health projects.

Well Dunedin Health Trust chief executive Sandy Baines said the money was left over when the Well Dunedin PHO amalgamated with Southern PHO last October.

It was an opportunity for people to come forward with ideas for how the funds could be used to benefit Dunedin residents' health.

Mrs Baines said the delay in apportioning the funds was because Southern PHO was offered the chance to propose Dunedin-centred health programmes but did not do so.

However, the PHO could apply for funds along with anybody else, she said.

Applications must fit into one of three specific areas: health promotion, health service innovation, or chronic conditions.

The trust was preparing to call for applications for the funds, and successful projects would be announced late this year.

The exact amount was yet to be confirmed, but was between $720,000 and $780,000.

The trust would seek the expertise of independent experts to assess applications.

The trust planned to wind up by next June, and it was possible the Southern District Health Board or another organisation would need to audit and monitor some of the grants.

Southern PHO chief executive Ian Macara said the former Invercargill PHO also had about $700,000 left over, which was being used to continue a community nursing project in the southern city.

Most of the nine PHOs which amalgamated had little money left over when they ceased to operate, he said.
