University of Otago
law students have won two contests in annual law student
competitions in Australia, in the best overall outcome for
Otago students in 19 years of participating in the event.
This was also the best overall result by any participating
university in the recent annual Australian Law Students'
Association conference, held in Sydney, which attracted more
than 500 law students from Australia, New Zealand, Asia and
the United Kingdom.
Otago law students reached finals in three of the four
contests they entered.
Louis Chambers and Alice Osman, of Otago University, won the
mooting contest, which Otago had last won in 1992, and Alex
Boock and Robert Clarke won the client interviewing
competition.
Kate Lawson-Bradshaw came second in the witness examination
contest.
Otago law faculty dean Prof Mark Henaghan said that, given
there were 32 law schools in Australia and six in New
Zealand, this was a "significant achievement" for the
faculty.
The Otago success against "this highly competitive group of
law schools" showed the "outstanding skills" and attributes
of Otago law students, he said.
