Free wireless internet trial extended

A trial of free wireless internet in Dunedin's Octagon is to continue, and an improved service is planned to cater for an influx of Rugby World Cup tourists from next month.

Councillors at Wednesday's Dunedin City Council meeting agreed in principal to extend the one-year trial to the end of the international rugby tournament in October.

Council staff planned to boost the network's capacity in September and October to cater for international visitors, a report by council customer services general manager Grant Strang said.

The improved service would add $2780 to the network's annual operating costs of $8640, paid for from the council's network services budget.

A report on ways of funding the service after the tournament would be considered by the finance, strategy and development committee on September 5.
