The presence of grossly intoxicated females - including one found partially clothed and another who bit a policewoman - on Dunedin streets has shocked police.

On Saturday night police were largely occupied dealing with drunk females on inner-city streets, Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said.

"This was not the norm," he said.

The majority of those found were taken home, if there was a suitable person to look after them in case they choked on their own vomit.

However, three females spent the night detoxing in police cells.

"In some cases they were so intoxicated we could not get an address out of them, or they had no-one capable of looking after them at the addresses they had given."

Police kept them in the cells until they could safely make their way home after the effects of alcohol had worn off.

In the majority of cases no charges would be laid, but that was not the case for one of the women, who bit a constable assisting her.

"When we are getting young females incapable of looking after themselves in any way, the dangers are obvious."

One of the young women - who were all aged 18 or 19 - was found in a state of undress along Great King St.

It appeared the women had been drinking before they heading into the city centre, he said.
