A team of Otago Polytechnic automotive students raced to
victory in their custom-engineered grass karts at a
competition meeting in Darfield over the weekend.
Students Tim Langley, Tyler Bennett, Sam Pickersgill, Wade
Turnbull, Tyler Gemmell and Josh Mclaren claimed overall
honours, after the kart they designed outpaced vehicles built
by teams from other South Island tertiary institutes.
Nick Moss, a programme manager at the polytechnic's school of
architecture, building, and engineering, said karts built by
Otago's three teams had all made the race finals in their
respective categories.
By recording wins on the slalom, straight drag, and sprint
courses, Mr Moss said, the "blue" team's kart had outlasted
its rivals to secure line honours in the final race series
and take first place.
"Their kart performed all day long. The looks on the guys'
faces were worth a million dollars," Mr Moss said.
The grass-kart race series is an annual event which pits
automotive and mechanical engineering students from South
Island polytechnics and tertiary institutes against each
other.
