Southland terminations in Dunedin

Dunedin Hospital is still being used for Southland terminations because of the Christchurch earthquake.

Before February 22, Southland women travelled to Christchurch for the service because the procedure is not carried out in Southland.

Figures released to the Otago Daily Times this week by Southern District Health Board revealed 148 terminations were carried out in Dunedin instead of Christchurch because of the earthquake.

DHB acting chief operating officer (Southland) Leanne Samuel said the DHB was reviewing how and where to provide terminations in the DHB.

"We are continuing to review a regional solution on how best to provide this service in a safe and appropriate way for women from Southland."

Dunedin Hospital was coping with the extra demand, she said.
