It's a little ironic when Fiona Johnston says she's not a big wearer of accessories.

The Dunedin artist and graphic designer has dabbled in making hair clips for about the past year.

What started as making them for herself and then her friends has led to the clips being available at Dunedin stores Baby Divine and Miracle.

"It's like a side project of mine which goes along with the art," she said.

Johnston chose high-quality ribbon from Anne's Sewing Room, which she then stitched on to the clips she imported from the United States.

"I've sort of perfected the technique. It takes the least time possible, 10 to 15 minutes per pair," she said.

Originally from Hamilton, she has a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in communication design. She also did the packaging for the clips, which put to use her design and craft skills, she said.

Johnston, who estimated that she had made hundreds of clips, said that she enjoyed getting the "great feedback" on them.

"They are so cute on little girls," she said.
