A University of Otago student at Cumberland College in
Dunedin has contracted measles after the visit of an infected
Wellington student late last month.
Southern District Health Board medical officer of health Dr
John Holmes said the student became ill on Wednesday last
week - just within the 18-day incubation window from the
Wellington visit.
He was unable to indicate how ill the student was.
The Wellington student with whom the Otago student had
contact was admitted to hospital with the illness.
Dr Holmes was pleased with the effectiveness of containment
measures introduced at Cumberland College when the risk
became known.
"Public Health South is pleased that there has only been one
secondary case."
The Otago student was isolated as soon as the illness was
suspected, to limit further spread.
"All known close contacts [of the person] are understood to
be immune. Regardless, there is a high level of vigilance at
Cumberland College for any further cases," Dr Holmes said.
He reiterated a call for people to be vaccinated, and for
those showing symptoms to stay home and call their doctor.
