It may not have been the perfect day for sundaes, but that did not stop Dunedin residents showing their support for the Otago Community Hospice yesterday.

The hospice ran a stall in the Golden Centre selling strawberry sundaes as part of the national Hospice Strawberry Festival.

Hospice public relations and communications adviser Kelda Hunter said sundae sales had been "quite good" by mid-afternoon.

"There's been a steady stream of people all day." The hospice was aiming to raise at least $40,000 from the sundae sales as well as a street appeal, Ms Hunter said.

"But $50,000 would be fantastic." All the ice cream was sold by the end of the day and only three cartons of strawberries remained.

They will be on sale at Mitre 10 in Andersons Bay today at a fundraising barbecue. This was the first year the sundae stall and street appeal had been held on the same day, which made it a vital collection day for the hospice as it was in desperate need of money, Ms Hunter said.

Last year the North Rd hospice recorded a $152,000 deficit, which she said was due to the economic climate and donor fatigue following the Christchurch earthquakes.

The hospice has about 300 volunteers, many of whom were taking part in the street appeal which spanned North and South Otago.
