Five fireworks eye injuries

Five people were treated at Dunedin Hospital for eye injuries after Guy Fawkes celebrations.

Emergency department senior medical officer Dr John Chambers said one patient's injury was serious. The patients were seen throughout the night, after 11.30pm on Saturday.

Through a hospital spokeswoman, Dr Chambers said he understood no-one sought hospital treatment for fireworks injuries last year.

No further details were available.

Yesterday, the Otago Daily Times reported 16-year-old Jessica Hatfield was injured on Saturday when a thrown firework burned through her stocking, scorching her leg in several places. She went to Dunedin Hospital but left because it was busy and had her wounds treated at home by her mother, a nurse.
