The generosity of Otago Daily Times Big Night In
concert-goers will provide some Calton Hill Primary School
pupils with food, shoes and raincoats next year.
Concert producer and Big Night In Charities Ltd director Doug
Kamo said $31,074.30 was donated at the event, with
$15,537.15 going to KidsCan Charitable Trust, and $3107.43
going to the Dunedin North and Toroa Lions Clubs.
The remainder went to Big Night In Charities Ltd to help to
pay for the concert.
KidsCan chief executive officer Julie Helson said the
organisation was "really proud" to be a recipient of some of
the concert donations.
"I think we feel really humbled that the people of Otago have
really got in behind the idea, and been so charitable.
"The money will be used to meet the needs of the children at
Calton Hill school and the whole purpose of it is to ensure
they are able to get to, and through, the school gate in a
way that they can be more engaged in their education," she
said.
The school would be provided with food from the start of term
one, shoes in March, and raincoats in April.
Ms Helson was looking forward to expanding the KidsCan
services in Otago, with other schools in the region invited
to contact the charity about receiving support.
"The money raised will actually go back into the area."
Calton Hill Primary acting principal Linda Homer said the
relationship with KidsCan was new and she was looking forward
to seeing how it would work.
"We are just really grateful to be able to be part of the
whole programme because we've got some really needy families
who would really appreciate what is being offered," she said.
Dunedin North Lions Club secretary Andrew Moffat said the
money it received would be shared with the Dunedin Toroa
Lions Club and be used on club-related causes in the region.
