Residential halls and colleges at the University of Otago are
scheduled to be among the first buildings to undergo a round
of earthquake strengthening.
University chief operating officer John Patrick told an
audience at a recent public lecture remedial work to
strengthen Cumberland College was scheduled to be carried out
before students returned for the 2012 year.
Initial seismic assessments had been carried out on some of
the university's campus buildings, he said.
"Most of them are OK," he told people at an open lecture to
outline the university's campus master plan.
Seismic upgrades were being considered for several of the
university's campus buildings, with the 14 residential halls
and colleges on the list for evaluation, he said.
Work at Cumberland College, the former Dunedin Hospital
nurses' home which was built in 1916, is scheduled to begin
next month, Mr Patrick said.
The university is considering its response to an Otago
Daily Times request, made nine days ago under the
Official Information Act, for copies of seismic reports for
six campus buildings which are now undergoing a round of
secondary detailed assessment.
