The relationship between the East Otago community and the
University of Otago will be further strengthened as part of a
research evening on Monday.
The East Otago Taiapure Evening will feature five-minute
presentations from the Marine Science department's
post-graduate students, who were undertaking research in the
area.
A taiapure is a local management tool established in an area
that has customarily been of special significance to an iwi
or hapu as a source of food or for spiritual or cultural
reasons.
The evening, beginning at 6pm, will be held at Puketeraki
Marae near Karitane, with research topics including Hector's
dolphins, wastewater disposal within the East Otago taiapure,
and factors driving variability in egg production by paua.
East Otago Taiapure chairman Brendan Flack said the inaugural
research presentations last year proved popular.
"It gives the students a chance to share their information
with the community," he said.
Students also benefited by enjoying a two-day hui at the
marae, and this helped enhance the relationship between
Marine Science, East Otago Taiapure and Kati Huirapa Runaka
ki Puketeraki, Mr Flack said.
