A barn dance of primary school principals is about to
take place in Dunedin with the retirement of several
principals, and the movement of others, scheduled for the end
of this term.
Abbotsford School principal Enid Grant will retire this
month, ending a 46-year career in education - 25 years of
which have been as principal at Abbotsford.
She will be replaced by Halfway Bush School principal
Stephanie Madden, who will take up the position in term 1
next year.
The board of trustees at Halfway Bush School has appointed
Winnie Cornelissen as the school's new principal. She is now
deputy principal at Mornington Primary School, but will
finish there this month.
Outram School principal Gregory Carroll is leaving education
temporarily due to illness, but expects to return soon.
He has been a teacher for 22 years and a principal for 17
years, the past five at Outram.
However, he has decided to leave his position at Outram while
he recovers. He will be replaced by Pleasant Point School
principal Jeremy Marshall in term 1 next year.
Concord School principal Margaret Hillerby will also retire
at the end of this year, ending a 42-year career in
education.
For the past seven years, she has been principal of Concord
School, and despite her retirement from full-time education,
she will continue as a consultant with the Positive
Psychology of Education Project in Dunedin schools.
She also plans to pursue other interests, such as becoming a
Scenar therapist - a complementary therapy which helps with
pain relief.
She will be replaced by Concord School's deputy principal
Steve Turnbull. He has been teaching for 11 years, and said
this would be his first principal role.
St Mary's School (Dunedin) has appointed Richard Duffy (St
Joseph's Cathedral School deputy principal) as its new
principal. He replaces acting principal Stephen Hopkins at
the start of term 1 next year.
Brockville School principal Ben Sincock has been appointed
principal of Caversham, College Street and Calton Hill
Schools which will be merged for term 1 next year.
Mr Sincock said his replacement at Brockville had not been
decided by the board of trustees yet, but believed a decision
would be made by the end of this week.
