Website tracking South Dunedin upgrade live

A website tracking the $700,000 upgrade of the South Dunedin retail area has gone live, allowing the public to follow the process as it unfolds.

The Dunedin City Council planning and environment committee late last month agreed to the revitalisation plan, part of extensive work done by the council's city development department in the past few years.

The plan, including improvements in King Edward St around Hillside Rd, Lorne St, Carey Ave and McBride St, follows two years of consultation, as well as projects already completed.

Those include a makeover of Lorne St with a new children's play area, street furniture and trees, and a one-off $50,000 fund building owners used for cleaning and painting facades, and maintaining verandas.

It responds to widespread concerns about the look and feel of the area, which has come through in surveys as the worst aspect of Dunedin.

Urban design special projects manager Emma O'Neill said recently some projects were still being negotiated, such as the painting of the rail bridge crossing on King Edward St.

The website, at www.dunedin.govt.nz/southdunedin, details the status of each project.

Council city development manager Anna Johnson said the format ensured the plan was "a living document", where people could see the status of projects, and both community and council-led ideas and projects could be added as they came up.

Pedestrian safety and amenity improvements on King Edward St were planned to start in May next year.
