Caution over calm ocean conditions

Lake-like calm sea conditions can be deceiving, and swimmers should not let down their guard, Surf Lifesaving New Zealand Otago-Southland club development officer Steph Laughton says.

Miss Laughton said people were behaving well on Dunedin beaches during the spell of hot weather and there had been no major rescue operations.

The excellent conditions had lured a large number of people to Dunedin beaches.

She warned, however, that calm conditions could fool people into a false sense of security.

Swimmers often forgot that rips were almost as strong in calm conditions as when the surf was high.

Patrols are carried out on St Clair, St Kilda, Warrington, Brighton and Kaka Point beaches.

Sunburn risk was high.

She said people should be careful with new aquatic gear received at Christmas with which they might not be familiar.

Water Safety New Zealand chief executive Matt Claridge called for holidaymakers to be cautious and remember basic water safety precautions.

"Many deaths can be avoided if people behave responsibly and remember the safety basics. We're hoping New Zealanders will remember the safety basics and have a lot of fun in the water this summer. No more unnecessary tragedies, please," Mr Claridge said.

Last summer, 10 people drowned in New Zealand between Christmas Eve and January 5, including two children under 5.
