Refurbishment of the once-battered pedestrian footbridge
at Ravensbourne will be officially marked with a ceremony next
month, following the completion of repairs by Dunedin City
Council contractors.
The $96,000 project was completed in November, months after
the council ended years of wrangling by accepting ownership
of the structure.
The work involved replacing the footbridge's deck and
handrails and cleaning or replacing dilapidated parts of the
bridge's Edwardian lattice-truss steelwork, which was
believed to be one of the few examples of its kind remaining
in New Zealand.
The bridge had since reopened, but Cr Andrew Noone said a
ceremony to formally unveil the completed project was being
organised by the Chalmers Community Board and would be held
in February.
