One of Dunedin's most prominent churches has been placed on the market.

The former Roslyn Presbyterian Church is for sale by negotiation, after it became surplus to requirements when the Maori Hill and Roslyn parishes combined in 2005 to become the Highgate Presbyterian Church.

"It's not an easy thing for churches to combine, but the parishioners were happy to combine, even though it's been quite hard for some of them," Presbyterian minister the Rev Barry Kelk said yesterday.

"But we couldn't afford to have it sitting empty, with the cost of things like insurance and earthquake protection."

The 850sq m church building sits on a 1635sq m property at 21 Highgate and has a rateable value of $670,000.

The sale includes the church, which is on two levels, and a hall.

Both buildings have kitchen facilities, toilets and "numerous other rooms".

The church was designed by architect J. Louis Salmond (1868-1950) and built in 1904, although it had its genesis as a Sunday school for First Church in 1870.

"It's one of the more iconic churches in Dunedin, because everyone sees it at the top of the ridge," Metro Realty agent Kyle Sutherland said yesterday.

"It's a rare sale in Dunedin."
