Roofing and insulation contractors have started work on the next stage of a forecast $5 million makeover of Dunedin City Council flats.

A block of 50 units in Victoria Rd in St Kilda is the first of the DCC-administered residences to have contractors begin the installation of insulation and new roofs.

DCC housing manager Sharon Tipa said 328 units are in line to be upgraded before June.

About $1 million has been budgeted this financial year for the project, with 155 units to receive new roofs and be outfitted with new insulation.

Another 173 council flats around the city are to be retro-fitted with insulation, given they are eligible to receive subsidies from the New Zealand Energy Efficient and Conservation Authority.

The council is in the second year of a planned five-year upgrade of its housing estates.
