Chris Fraser died in Nairobi this week after a short illness.
He was 64.
Mr Fraser grew up in Dunedin, before starting his film career in Australia.
In 1977, he directed the feature film Summer City, starring Mel Gibson and Steve Bisley, and had success with commercials for blue chip corporate clients, such as "The Big Coke Can" campaign for Coca-Cola.
He also established a reputation for creating innovative music videos, producing the Working Class Man video for Jimmy Barnes of Cold Chisel in 1986.
He maintained a passion for music all his life and was still regularly playing guitar in a Nairobi band shortly before his death.
Mr Fraser had worked in Nairobi for MGM Kenya since 2007, as a film director and writer, producing television commercials, documentaries and drama programmes.
Mr Fraser is survived by his son, Blake, and two daughters in Nairobi.
His funeral will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, tomorrow.
