Snobbery 'big factor' in city school controversy

A parent has come out in support of embattled Rotary Park School principal Carmel Casey, as a group of parents prepare to withdraw their children from the school today.

Mrs Casey has been the focus of allegations of incompetent teaching practices and staff bullying at the school, and parents have threatened to remove their children today as a show of defiance over her return to the school after being on leave for the past six months.

However, a parent, who declined to be named, said much of the controversy surrounding the school had been created by a small group of parents who had "taken it upon themselves" to try to manage the school.

"And if things don't go exactly how they want it, they cause problems," he said.

"We saw this in several different ways from this group, such as them completely ignoring us and some other parents [who] they seemed to decide were not from a high income family - if you get my gist.

"The snobbery factor, I believe, is actually quite a big one in this case, with Mrs Casey no doubt trying to do what her job is - manage the school in her principal's role - which of course may not have met with what this group of parents had decided they wanted.

"And subsequently, the issues that are now occurring seem to us to be more like revenge than anything else."

He said not all parents would be removing their children from the school this morning, as was claimed by a parent on Friday last week.

"We have no plans, just like other parents we have talked to also have no plans, to remove their children.

"It is actually a great little school, with the only issues seeming to come from a small group of mainly snobby parents."

He categorically stated he had no connection with Mrs Casey, but had had much contact with her through school in the first part of last year.

"We never had an issue with her. Neither did our child.

"In fact, from our observations at the last school fair when Mrs Casey arrived to visit, several children ran up to her and hugged her and were almost fighting over who was to hug or talk to her next.

"Rotary Park is an amazing school, and we have never had a problem with it, like many other parents . . .

"I also think it is this small number of troublemakers who are misleading others and causing much of any problems that do exist."

Commissioner Cleave Hay said he had not seen any evidence of "snobbery" or a bid by a select group of parents, to control the school.

Incorrect pupil numbers

In this morning's report ODT states only 13 pupils started yesterday in Rotary Park. However, in one class only there were 14 children present, in another more than that, so the maths is very very wrong here.  There has been enough bad press and sensationalism here already, so please get your facts right prior to publishing not to do any more harm than is already done by taking comments out of context and putting words into parents' mouths.

Snobbery at Rotary Park

When I saw this reported I could scarce believe my eyes.

Snobbery at Rotary Park!

When I left Dunedin in 1967, never to return, all of the snobs were confined to Maori Hill.

By whose fiat were they allowed to leave Maori Hill and transport themselves to the nether regions of the City?

Rotary Park snobbery

Well " So Annoyed" if you talk the talk you have to be able to walk the walk. I didn't notice your name. It's the children that are important and no-one should forget that. I have no affiliation with the school whatsoever; however, in my experience there are usually one or two who start things rolling and convince others that they should be following them.

Put the children first

I have to say I am quite concerned by the comments of "So Annoyed", who seems to admit that overall the parents and children get along ok with Mrs Casey, but gives the impression it's about a teacher's relationship with her?

It also concerns me that he/she seems to think anyone with a different opinion from the 'mob' who I observed at the school this morning, should provide their name - when they themselves don't have to.  Why is that - so you can pick on them next?

Here's my advice - put the children first!  All this nonsense is very stressful to my child and others.  If you have a problem with Mrs Casey, follow the correct channels in sorting it - not trying to get attention through the media, etc, all in the pretense of 'solving a problem'.  It is very selfish and concerning.

If I see any more mob-mentality at the school again I will personally contact CYFs reporting those parents who seem to think it is ok to stress their children and others out.  I will also discuss with the police the legalities of a 'gang' of parents hanging around the school, some of which I noted don't even have kids at the school!

Disgusting, selfish, uncaring behaviour.  You should be ashamed of yourselves.

School parents

Why is it that 'this parent' is keen to sling mud, but doesn't have the guts to be named. What do they have to hide. Name calling and then hiding behind 'who declined to be named' is pretty cowardly.

"The snobbery factor, I believe, is actually quite a big one in this case, with Mrs Casey no doubt trying to do what her job is - manage the school in her principal's role - which of course may not have met with what this group of parents had decided they wanted.

And subsequently, the issues that are now occurring seem to us to be more like revenge than anything else."

What are these 'issues' as stated above, that this parent speaks of? How should a principal manage the school? No specifics have been detailed. What are we talking about? I guarantee they have NO idea. Come on, get to grips with reality.

I too have certainly had no issue with Mrs Casey in day-to-day situations, and she has never treated our children poorly. She responded to us very quickly when their was an issue between our child and another student, etc.  However, the 'problems' are not about the relationships between the parents and Mrs Casey, nor are they about the relationships between her and the children. The 'problems' are a lot more deep-set than that and unfortunately this parent is seeing it from a surface perspective.

If this parent could walk a mile in the shoes of a teacher then they may have their eyes opened.

Let's hope the investigation puts this to rest once and for all.
