Wanganui High School head girl Kiri Wilson (17) led
Bayfield High School principal Judith Forbes into her new
school during a handing-over ceremony and powhiri yesterday.
More than 700 pupils, staff and Dunedin and Wanganui iwi
assembled in Herron Hall to welcome the first female
principal to Bayfield since the school was established in
1961.
Mrs Forbes was previously deputy principal at Wanganui High
School, where she worked for 14 years.
She has a strong association with Dunedin. After studying at
the University of Otago and Dunedin College of Education, she
started her teaching career at The Taieri High School (now
Taieri College).
Mrs Forbes is only the fourth principal in the school's
50-year history, replacing Denis Slowley, who resigned last
April after 12 years at the school.
