A big-hearted appeal to prospective pet owners is taking place this week as part of a nationwide Valentine's Day animal adopt-a-thon, with a Dunedin launch coinciding with the official commemoration of one of the Otago SPCA's most ardent local supporters.

The late Rev Helene Mann was recognised by a small group of family, volunteers, and staff of the Opoho haven yesterday for her support of the Otago SPCA.

Mrs Mann's husband, Prof Jim Mann, and their daughter, Philippa Kruger, watched as a framed photograph of the Anglican priest was added to an honorary line-up of the Otago SPCA's most valued members, including founder Sir George Fenwick.

Otago SPCA chairwoman Sharon Lont said Mrs Mann had been a valued supporter of the SPCA and was the first woman to be added to the Opoho Haven's "wall of recognition".

"She was a wonderful woman, who had such a big and beautiful heart," Ms Lont said.

The recognition for Mrs Mann was timely, given the SPCA's national Valentine's Day adopt-a-thon appeal, she said.

The SPCA wants to find homes for 1000 animals and is appealing to prospective pet owners to adopt before Valentine's Day, next week.

The Opoho facility was offering a special on adult cats, allowing owners to adopt the felines for half the normal price, Ms Lont said.

SPCA Opoho haven office manager Brenda Stuart said while kittens were always popular to adopt, the neutered and vet-checked adult cats made for a "more-chilled out" pet.

"They are more settled, are house-trained, and are used to people," Ms Stuart said.

The Opoho haven has more than 100 pets available for adoption as part of the Valentine's Day appeal.
