Security camera footage from inside a City Taxis cab is being
reviewed by police in a bid to identify a male passenger
allegedly involved in an attack on a female driver on
Saturday night.
Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken said police would review recorded
camera footage taken from inside the vehicle.
"Security cameras are a required piece of equipment in every
taxi, so yes, our investigation will include a review of any
recorded [footage]", she said.
City Taxis manager Frank Wilks said the incident was a matter
for the police to investigate.
Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said the 39-year-old female taxi
driver was assaulted on Saturday night by a male passenger.
The man had been picked up from an address in Waverley and
taken to a Portsmouth Dr property about 10pm.
The man had "grabbed and scratched" the female driver, after
the vehicle stopped to drop him off.
The woman received "minor injuries" in the attack, but had
managed to get the passenger out of her cab, Snr Sgt Brown
said.
Security cameras and emergency monitoring systems were made
compulsory after a legislation change to improve safety
measures for taxi drivers and patrons was brought in by
Parliament in August last year.
