Alarm bells rang yesterday when it appeared a wayward tourist
was driving a campervan along the railway line between Port
Chalmers and Dunedin.
Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken, of Dunedin, said a Roseneath
resident contacted police about 6.30pm and officers were
dispatched to investigate.
Fortunately, it turned out to be a KiwiRail inspection
vehicle, which has been checking the lines south of Picton.
KiwiRail southern service manager Neil Campbell said there
had been several calls to police about "a wayward tourist on
the lines" during their journey south.
"We appreciate the public taking an interest in what appears
to be a campervan on the railway."
Their journey would conclude in Invercargill today, he said.
