Sawyers Bay memorial to be moved

The Dunedin City Council has recommended moving the Sawyers Bay War Memorial because it has been found to be on private property, a report to tomorrow's Chalmers Community Board meeting says.

Unveiled in 1921, the memorial commemorates15 "Sawyers Bay sons" killed in World War 1.

The memorial was on the edge of State Highway 88, and was difficult to access because the road was very busy, parks officer Gordon Graham's report said.

The main issue was that last year it was found the memorial was on private property, a fact discovered in the course of processing a subdivision application.

Mr Graham recommended moving the memorial to the other side of the state highway, on to the newly acquired reserve opposite, beside the Dunedin to Port Chalmers railway line.

The other option, which was not favoured, was moving the memorial to reserve land directly beside the existing site.
