Otago Boys' High School Hostel matron Toni Leen is surrounded by pupils and staff following the Mass Shave Off at the school yesterday.

Among those in the action are (from top) Sekenaia Pola, Eamon Frazer and Arthur Ibbotson.

Twenty-five pupils (mostly prefects) and six teachers had their heads shaved after hundreds of pupils at the school entered a bidding war to determine who would have the honour of shaving their heads.

Head boy Thomas Wardhaugh said the event had raised about $4000 for the Otago Community Hospice.

"We chose the hospice because of the excellent service they provide for cancer sufferers and other terminally ill patients throughout Otago. We also thought it would be nice to keep the money in the Otago community."

The Otago Community Hospice needs to raise $1.5 million every year to ensure the essential palliative care services they provide remain free of charge.
