Mercy gives $50,000 to appeal

Dunedin's Mercy Hospital has given $50,000 to the Chair in Neurosurgery appeal, which has now toppped $1.8 million.

Mercy mission co-ordinator Janice McDrury said funding a professor would keep Dunedin up with developments in neurosurgery.

Mercy liked the "multi-pronged" nature of the campaign, from which there would be many benefits, she said.

The proposal would ensure three neurosurgeons at Dunedin Hospital, as well as research projects at Otago University and teaching opportunities.

Mercy wanted Otago and Southland people to have a strong neurosurgical service.

It aimed to support projects that helped the community.

The donation was from its charitable outreach fund.

Neurosurgery treatment had changed hugely in the past 30 to 40 years, and funding the professor in Dunedin would allow the city to play a part in how the discipline developed.

Neither Mercy nor Marinoto Clinic offered neurosurgical services at present.

Chair in Neurosurgery project manager Irene Mosley was thrilled with the "fantastic" donation, which brought the total to $1,841,594. The campaign aims to raise $3 million.

It was gratifying the campaign was supported by a respected Dunedin health provider.

• Dunedin law firm Rodgers Law has given $5000 to the campaign and is urging other Otago law firms to do the same.

"We challenge other law firms to match us," partner Steve Rodgers said.

"We've got to look after people and that means our [Dunedin] medical school.

"Sometimes it means putting your hand in your pocket when it's important."
